A murder? Did they plan for the child to die?

Did they plan for the child to die?

This kid was told to run for 3 hrs (the equivalent of a marathon) without stopping. What would you call it?

A murder? Did they plan for the child to die?

Doesn't matter except to whether they're charged with first or second degree murder. If they didn't plan for the child to die then it's second degree murder.

That's unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Murder needs malice aforethought- ie. they wanted to kill this child. Murder is an excessive charge. I agree with involuntary manslaughter.

No... Murder doesn't need malic aforethought. Second Degree Murder is murder caused by actions designed to harm. And they were 'punishing' her so they had designs to harm. If I decide to push you into a pool to punish you for doing so to me, there's no particular evil intent just punishment but if you die then it's still second degree murder.

Manslaughter is an accidental death. I walked by and bumped into you.

Second Degree is opportunistic. 1) I saw an opportunity and knew you could swim so I pushed you in or 2) I'm getting back at you.

First Degree is intention. I despise you and wish your death, so let me put some cement blocks on you!

Only FIRST DEGREE murder requires forethought. Second degree murder does not. Look it up if you don't believe me.

This is in every state!! Look at Maryland where a mother cooked her son and served the child to the father because the "father Loved the child More than her". Then you have the two girls in AZ that were locked in a crib for 9 years never hugged or talked to. how about the case in New York where The mother starved her child to death. or the parents that won money in AZ and bought a new TV and Computer and played EVERQUEST never feeding their girl for that week because Ever quest is more important!!!!.

Abuse exists at all levels of education, economic class, every town and city in the world, at home or away from it, with or with out "GOD", And in ever political organisation. In all cases it is wrong!!

Fed, I dislike scum like this. And you are not much better putting a politicalspin on it. You should be ashamed using death to further your politicalIdeas when their is no politics involved. I know you are well educated but it is comments like this that cause people to think you just drank your way through school and didn't learn at all!!!

The same goes for you John. I thought you people had a higher bar.

        This evangelical Christianity at work.

Not one mention of religion and from looking further not a word of God or Evengelical Christians to be found...

But there was a mention of ....

Court records show that Robert Hardin filed for divorce in August of 2010. In his complaint, he asserted his wife was bi-polar and of had alcoholic tendencies. He accused her of previously having run off with the couple's own child.

        http://www.nbc12.com/story/16997069/police-girl-forced-to-run-3-hours-dies-2-charged

I guess the chance to bash religion was more tempting than to respect the death of a 9 yr old little girl...

        What a shame...

As far as I am concerned this is a clear example of bible belt punishment.

Some one cooking and eating a child is crazy no doubt about it, and child abuse is happening across America but these women were not and are not crazy, they were just punishing the child for a lie.

How bad a lie could it have been to run a child for 3 hours until her little heart gave out?

With ZERO knowledge of if these people even practice any form of religious beliefs?

Some might say that was just stereotyping people based upon where they live...Are all people that live in the "bible belt" one type of person? Because the only thing you have is your bias and the location in the nation these people live...

but these women were not and are not crazy,

Court documents claim the younger woman maybe Bi-Polar... Crazy ? Or mental issues quite possibly! Which are unrelated to their Unknown Unspecified hell not even suggested by anyone but you Religious beliefs...

But please feel free to continue to denigrate the poor dead 9 yr old girl ...

It is interesting that if someone commits a mean and stupid act, they just must have been Christians. Frankly, as a Christian, I'm getting rather tired of the stereotyping.

By this rationale---and I use the word VERY loosely---that Powell guy who killed his children and then himself by blowing up their house must have been Muslim, because "everyone knows" only Muslims are suicide bombers.

One day, my Christian God will demand a reckoning from these two women for the atrocity they committed against this poor little girl, and before they themselves leave this world, in some way He wil set things right on her behalf...

I would like to see the U.S. government offer a national basic parenting class. NO TAX DEDUCTIONS for children unless you have taken this basic class and passed. It could even start at the state levels first. Only a small step in the right direction.

Why in the world do you want the government telling you how to raise your child?

Why should people have to take a class to know that it's wrong to make a little girl run for 3 hours with nothing to drink? This is common sense, but unfortunately common sense isn't so common.

Catjmj, Because with a child abused every 10 seconds I'm thinking there is a lack of knowledge and basic understanding on the safety and welfare on the lives of innocent children. The classes can be taken in your local high schools. I'm not a big fan of government personally. But I am a big fan for the safety of children.

There's absolutely too much child abuse! I just don't think a class is going to prevent it. Like these women that keep cooking their babies in their ovens and microwaves...there's something else going on there. One woman claims to not have realized it was her child she was eating. Scott Powell...a class was not going to teach him that he shouldn't chop his kids with a hatchet before setting them on fire. Most child abusers know that what they are doing is wrong.

It may not prevent it but it will prevent a plea that they didn't know that it was wrong or that they didn't know it could be considered child abuse. We had a child, a baby really, die because the parents didn't 'know' that the baby couldn't live off apple juice alone.

Catjmj, sorry I thought I responded to you and my computer did a blink..and now I see the comment didn't post.

The reason I think those classes would help if it appears someone in the class needs more education, parenting skills, or other special needs it may raise a red flag. Parenting is one tough job for all of us on our best days. maybe and just maybe a red flag goes off when someone in the class thinks it's ok to cook your children or like here making a child run for three miles is suitable punishment. I think for that tax deduction or that earned tax credit they really earn it! In hopes of saving children and spending our tax dollars in a more construction way. IMO..What we have now isn't working..NOT with a child abused every ten seconds...

No problem Wizard. What would happen if a red flag was raised in this class? Nothing, because we wouldn't be able to sterilize them to prevent them from hurting their child. I do like that you'd have to take this class to be able to get tax credits, though.

Rahlly - some people really amaze me.

Catjmj, Make them take more classes or put into place an intervention program to moderate these children. What's wrong with saying as a country we are NOT going to let you abuse our children. We get to pick up the check from the devastation and destruction caused by these families, in our schools, hospitals, prisons, and the mental and physical heathcare services. JMO

Last time I checked contraceptives were completely voluntary. The only people trying to control woman and their reproductive system are conservatives. It borders on lunacy to try and claim democrats are forcing genocide simply because they believe a woman has the right to use birth control if she so chooses.

As a father of two girls I cant believe how people can comment like this they must not have children or they just don't care about them. I have never hit them. All I have to do for my oldest(who is three) is say "If you Continue to act this way You will not get your broccoli tonight this is your warning" and she snaps back to being her normal good self. The youngest 18 months I cant do any thing she is a baby and I just have to be calm and try to teacher and show her what it is to be good.

As far as children are concerned my wife and I have raised 3 of our own and we are foster parents, so on top of our 3 children we have also raised a hand full of foster children.

Parents who raise their own kids have no idea how easy they have it. Try raising a few kids from broken homes or children who have lost parents and I guarantee you'll be enlightened as to how easy you now have it.

Our most recent foster child is a 6 year old girl who lost her entire family in a house fire. She was the only survivor, She not only lost her mother, father and sister she also lost her grand parents. You want to talk about a rough road ahead ..?? well there you have it ..!!

This young girl is in such bad shape that I hired a child physiologists/therapist and a nanny/nurse who I convinced to live in full time. The physiologists/therapist alone is costing me more then most people earn in a year and the state won't pay a dime towards it. Thankfully I own my own business's and can afford the 120K+ a year she's costing me not including room, board and what it cost me to convert an additional room into an office for her.

Now on top of that expense the nurse/nanny is costing me close to $50K a year. Unfortunately the young girl was in such bad shape that the state was considering institutionalising her which is something my wife and I wouldn't tolerate so to keep her out of an institution we hired the necessary experts full time at our own expense.

As far as the young girl in the story who died, Other then it being an unimaginable tragedy I don't know what else to say about it other then maybe we as a nation should stop making hero's out of people who resort to harsh discipline.

I remember arguing with conservatives right here on Newsvine over a father who savagely beat his autistic daughter over Internet usage. Most of the conservatives here where praising the man like he was some sort of hero for savagely beating an autistic teenage girl. What they fail to realize is that situation could have turned tragic very easily. It was a violent savage beating and its not to hard to imagine the girl slipping and falling while trying to get away from her enraged father. What would have happened if she would have fallen and split her head open on the side of a dresser ?? Another tragedy maybe ??

Just so you know I my self was Diagnosed with Autism 4 times and that was changed to 4 different things every time. With the love of my Conservative parents and their patients I was able to over come my issues. I made it out of the Geniuses program in Californiain sixth grade and had my expulsion lifted after 4 years. I understand what it is like to have anger better than most people. I can control it when Most would have killed the other person in a postal rage. try being calm when the person you work next to calls you a gay homo and threatens to pound your face in every day for 7 months all because I believed in not having premarital relations.

My brother in law is an adopted relative that has aspurgers and was abused as a child I have been working with my father in-law in helping him over come his issues. and every timeI see him he improves. he is the one that is making the effort (he is high functioning aspergers) I and his adopted parents are just helping him. he is now 10 and still has a long way to go

Amen to that. My son turned 18 in January, is about three months away from his high school graduation, and just got his drivers' license. Just yesterday, he was a little kid---now he's 4 inches taller than I am,barely fits in the cab of my pickup and is the reason my razors get dull so fast (he SHAVES).

                  Where did the time go?

                  @Auto101,

I can only salute you. You are a success in every way that counts!!

Is that what it means to be from Maine? I can unload some sweeping generalizations on Mainers, but it would be a violation of the COH, and I have a lot of respect for my fellow Americans. Try to dial it back a bit, Hugh. It's not a joke when you print it, it's libel.

                    T Fargo,

No I won't dial it back at all.

And yes Alabamastan is the ultimate in jokes, obscenities, and ignorance. After living there for 14 years I saw it up close and personal.

And no genius, satire, irony, sarcasm, etc are not libel, but nice try at the melodrama and hyperbole. Given Alabamastan's most recent history, nothing I could write or say could be construed as a misrepresentation.

But thanks for playing, you are indeed a fine and noble person, now go f...

Living all over Alabama or in one place for 14 years? The latter is just a microcosm of what one can experience and formulate a generalized opinion upon. If I had a bad experience in one part of France and came back to America calling all things French bloated, impersonal, rude, dirty, disrespectful, snooty etc. it would not be a fair assesment of France as a whole.

Now this has gotten off topic far enough, what do you think about what these women did and how do you feel about this 9 yr old girl being lead to her death this way? And by all means don't hold back.

Both parents should get max penalty. Having lived in Alabama, I know that the time they are going to spend in jail is not going to be a good one. Most folks there don't "cotton" to abusing children, no matter what the cause.

What is bothering me, in addition to this atrocity, is the fact that there were witnesses to this horror. Why didn't somebody step in sooner and protect this child? Why didn't someone call the cops? I hope these witnesses realise that they could have saved this little girl!

The same reason people used to stand around and watch people get hung or lynched, they were afraid to do or say anything.

I used to work in a gym and one day I saw a woman forcing her daughter to run. She wouldn't give her anything to drink or let her rest for even a second. I watched the daughter very closely to make sure that I would be able to help her if she had any problems. When she was done and in the locker room, I took the mother aside and explained to her the dangers of running that hard with no water. I never saw her "training" her again.

I think the two women should be forced to run for 3 hours...if they survive then that's it...if not, too freaking bad. What monsters!!

Savannah Hardin's life was in turmoil long before police say the 9-year-old was run to death by her grandmother and stepmother for allegedly lying about some candy she ate.
